The Melitzer Rebbe, my esteemed and beloved teacher and spiritual guide, explained to me yesterday - in the exact words that he heard from the holy Rebbe Aaron of Belz of blessed memory - that the murder of 6,000,000 Jewish martyrs in the Nazi Holocaust was the pinnacle of Gog and Magog's attack against Am Yisroel, the people of Israel. As a result, a third of the Jewish people was destroyed. Gog and Magog are dead.

The Bostoner Rebbe Today, as B’nei Yisroel – both in Eretz Yisroel and Chutz L’Aretz – find themselves in the Galus of Edom, there remains two possible conclusions to Jewish history. The Final Redemption and the restoration of the Beis HaMikdash will certainly come about by divine decree, but the only question is when and how. Tanach contains prophecies of a euphoric end of days, as well as ominous destructive visions such as the battles of Gog and Magog (Yechezkel 38-39).
We have the ability through Teshuva and the cumulative merits of our Torah, Avodah, and Maasim Tovim, to force Hashem – as it were – to speed up the stages of Geulah sooner than His divine decree. This is the redemption we daven for when we say that Hashem should ‘return to Yerushalayim with compassion’ as well as the flourishing and dignified salvation ‘that we hope for all day long’. However, if we cannot come together to bring about the Final Redemption our way, it will nevertheless come against our will, but perhaps with undesired consequences along the way.
May the light of Chanukah cast away the darkness that permeates the world during Galus, concealing the truth of Torah and preventing us from seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Just as the Greek exile happened in Eretz Yisroel while the Beis HaMikdash stood, let us recognize that the Jewish Nation has made tremendous strides – with the help of Hashem – in the past century towards the Geulah Shalayma, yet there is still more work to be done. May we actively bring about the Geulah – on our terms – speedily in our days
The Satmar Rav (Vayoel Moshe maamar 1, chapter 24) also says that the war of Gog and Magog will take place after mashiach. He quotes the Targum Yonasan on Shir Hashirim 8:4 which seems to imply otherwise: "The king mashiach will say, I adjure you, my people, house of Israel: why do you fight with the nations of the world to go out of exile? And why do you rebel against the armies of Gog and Magog?" It sounds like the war between Israel and Gog and Magog will begin before mashiach comes, and then mashiach will come and tell the Jews to stop fighting. The Satmar Rav explains, however, that the same wicked nations who, after mashiach, will wage the war of Gog and Magog exist before the coming of mashiach, and will afflict the Jewish people then as well
